Some Tips and Tricks for your ROM Collection

The items the follow below are not rules, they are just suggestions reflecting what I use to do regarding my private collection of games! GO ahead, take a look!

• The very first and most important suggestion: BE ORGANIZED! Break your ROM collection in several folders, create directories separated by systems, regions (USA, Japan, Europe) and letters (A, A-B, A-C, D-E, A-M, N-Z).
• Organize the name of your ROMS. Try to follow a nice pattern for all sets. Remove the strange characters and remember about the limitations of the FAT-X (the Xbox filesystem) before renaming your ROMS. They are: Maximum number of 42 characters INCLUDING the extension of the file and the illegal characters. Use this program to correct rename your roms. • For batching rename the best tool out there is the free windows software called Bulk Rename. It is a very nice program who works wonderfully when you need to change the name and even move around (and filter) a large group of files.
• If you feel yourself more like a videogame player instead of a ROM collector, remove all the undesired games from your sets. Too much games you only confuse you at the time you decide to play something. I, for example, do remove all the sports games with exception of golf, tennis and olympic ones. I hate soccer, basket and all the similar games.
• One of the most painful task out there is when you want to set up screenshots for all games in a collection. Entering game by game and taking the shot mannually could be a hell! One tip I have for you: Get some DATs and some screen packs from the No-Intro Group, make use of them to rename your roms accordingly to their screenshots, rename again both roms and screenshots to be compatible with FAT-X based on the same pattern and use this wonderful program to convert a single folder full of PNGS to the Xport format - gamefolder/0001.png, 0002.png, etc - all automatically!
• Make use of the favorites feature! On most emulators, press white on the games you like more to add them to your favorite list. Sometimes when you sit dow to play, there is no time to lose searching for a game... go right to your "Best of" list and start gaming! Life is short!
